Located approximately 2 km east of Morozaki at the tip of the Chita Peninsula, this island is considered a hidden retreat from the bustling city. It is popular among tourists from Aichi Prefecture, especially those from Nagoya, as an accommodation spot after sightseeing around Mikawa Bay or Ise.
True to the reputation of the Chita Peninsula for its deep faith, this island also houses Daikouin, one of the sacred sites of the Chita Shikoku 88 Temples Pilgrimage, where visitors can explore places associated with the revered monk Kobo Daishi. Many elderly people visit the island for the “Odaishi Meguri” pilgrimage.
When the ferry arrives at the port, the first thing that catches your eye is the row of large hotels and other accommodations. If you come expecting a quaint, small island, you will be astonished by its scale. The island’s specialties are octopus dishes and clams.
