Chiran Peace Museum preserves and displays materials left by the deceased Army pilots of the unprecedented Tōkko operation in Okinawa during the final moments of World War II. “Tokko” means “Special Attack” in Japanese and refers to a military tactic of ramming attack in which pilots crashed themselves and their aircraft into enemy warships. “Tokko” is better known as “Kamikaze” internationally.
Triangular house is a replica of the real ones where tōkko pilots spent the nights before they took off on a mission. The wooden structures were half-buried and only the roofs were above ground. They were called “triangular houses” because all you could see were the triangular gables.
